J Mascis- Tied to a Star
I think this may be this year’s most underappreciated album. So full of intense emotion being recited over some gentle, soft acoustic guitar gave off a very out of balance feel. Emotion should either be sang about over sad, quiet guitar and piano riffs or loud and angsty emo music. Or at least that was what I thought before I heard this album. The fairly happy sounding and up beat guitar riffs just fit with Mascis’ voice and even when he was touching on some frankly sad topics, the album never felt cheesy or over done. He is able to get across whatever message he wants, sad or not and I commend him greatly for this. On top of this skill as a song writer, I also associate this album with one of my favorite times of this year, when I spent my fall break in Portland and every time I hear Mascis and his gentle, gruff voice I reminisce and I stand by the fact that sometimes the best music simply was heard during a great time in life.
