Synthesizer, bass and the highest of falsetto voices all added up and sprinkled on top of a thunderous one-two drumbeat punctured by a sharp snare cannot, simply cannot create something bad. And Everything Everything has not failed. Their opening track, “Cough Cough” off of their latest LP, “Arc” is just an explosion of sound and energy, ready to make the most shy person get off their butts and jump up and down, making them full of delight. The off beat drums hitting at such odd times only increases the danceability of the song and the intricate electro synths flow through the song so quickly, the only solution is to dance faster in order to make sure the full effect of the song is absorbed. But maybe it is the bass that hits for just one beat per measure of the chorus that makes this song so catchy. Either way, the song is instantly enjoyable and “Cough Cough” is everything one could want from an opening track, and everything one could want from a song in general.
