One of the greatest underground rappers from the 90’s and early 2000’s, Common never really gets the love that he deserves. His lyrics are positive and talk about world issues, unlike some popular rappers from today. His respect for women is astounding in the hip hop culture and he was a huge influence onto Brother Ali, another rapper with similar positive lyrics and jazzy beats. Common also uses some extremely jazzy beats to back up his flow.
But what really makes Common is his deep, filling voice that carries in a room and just seems to have wisdom coated to his words. He narrated Kid Cudi’s first album and it made the album have much more of a presence and feeling of strength. If you hear Common’s voice, you just feel good. And in turn, his rap was able to influence many a young rapper, including Brother Ali and Kid Cudi.
